Sam made this reproduction of a Native American Flute similar to the one Kokopelli plays. Native American flutes have a distinctive sound because their design is unique. Most flutes from other cultures have an open bore. The Native American flute has a blocked bore that directs the air flow up to a portion of the flute called the “nest.” Here a part called the “bird” directs the air flow to a splitting edge to create the tone. The “bird” is usually held in place with a leather strap. The bottom photo is a close-up of the “bird.”
